Artist's Description
Least Bitterns have the peculiar habit of striding around on reeds as they hunt for small fish to feed on. This specimen was one of several Linda and I have seen and photographed at the Viera wetlands near Melbourne Florida. Least Bitterns are infrequent visitors to New England. Their larger cousins, American Bitterns are more frequent residents, but about equally infrequently seen here.
This painting was featured on the cover of the July/August 2021 edition of "Bird Watcher's Digest"

I paint only in watercolor, in a style that lies somewhere between impressionistic and photo-realistic. I love the transparency and immediacy of watercolors and celebrate the happy accidents of the medium, as well as its challenges. After many years of drawing only as a preliminary step to the main event - a painting - I've recently begun drawing as an end in itself again. Please browse my catalog of drawings and paintings.
