Pemaquid Point is on the so-called "fringed coast" of Maine, not too far from Rockland. Like many in Maine, the lighthouse there sits atop a rocky knoll that falls away to the sea. It can be difficult to get a good vantage from which to photograph or paint it. This view is from the southwest. I was drawn to the scene by the crevices in the rocks that converge toward the group of buildings. The late afternoon sun helped define the crevices, casting deep shadows into their depths, while it illuminated the lighthouse, keeper's house and bellhouse tower with a warm glow.

My subject matter reflects three life-long passions: nature, history, and architecture. I have lived most of my life in New England. I love painting subjects from my home region, as well as from the travel that my wife, Linda and I enjoy doing together. I paint only in watercolor, in a style that lies somewhere between impressionistic and photo-realistic. I love the transparency and immediacy of watercolors and celebrate the happy accidents of the medium, as well as its challenges.
