Artist's Description

This painting depicts the last and largest steam locomotive - a Pacific (4-6-2) - that would have used the arches prior to their having been abandoned when the tracks were realigned in 1912. It's shown crossing the largest of the keystone arches that were built under the direction of George Washington Whistler around 1840. The painting was completed with the help of Dave Pierce, the president of the Chester Foundation and curator of the Chester Depot museum. Dave provided a scale model of the Pacific, as well as an assist in taking the reference photos of the arch. It was an interesting challenge to imagine the locomotive chugging through the glade on the long-gone rails that once crossed the series of arches on their way between Boston and Albany.

Completed in November, 2012. The price listed for the original includes matting, glazing and framing. Please contact me to discuss delivery arrangements if you're interested in purchasing this painting.

About Steve Hamlin

Steve Hamlin

My subject matter reflects three life-long passions: nature, history, and architecture. I have lived most of my life in New England. I love painting subjects from my home region, as well as from the travel that my wife, Linda and I enjoy doing together. I paint only in watercolor, in a style that lies somewhere between impressionistic and photo-realistic. I love the transparency and immediacy of watercolors and celebrate the happy accidents of the medium, as well as its challenges. After many years of drawing only as a preliminary step to the main event - a painting - I've recently begun drawing as an end in itself again. Please browse my catalog of drawings and paintings. If you have a comment or question, please contact me. I...
