Artist's Description
This is the first painting I did from material I collected on our September-October, 2012 trip to Shenandoah Valley. I took hikes to two different waterfalls during the two weeks we were in the area of Shenandoah national Park - South River and Doyles River. On the return leg of the second hike to Doyles River Falls, I came across about six different species of butterflies. I'm no expert on butterflies, but I knew that if I got decent photos of them, I'd have no trouble identifying them. This pair of Buckeyes is actually a composite of two shots of the same specimen. It was conveniently investigating this Blue Wood Aster in full sun along the trail.
Completed in October, 2012. The price listed for the original includes matting, glazing and framing. Please contact me to discuss delivery arrangements if you're interested in purchasing this painting.
About Steve Hamlin
My subject matter reflects three life-long passions: nature, history, and architecture. I have lived most of my life in New England. I paint only in watercolor, in a style that lies somewhere between impressionistic and photo-realistic. I love the transparency and immediacy of watercolors and celebrate the happy accidents of the medium, as well as its challenges. After many years of drawing only as a preliminary step to the main event - a painting - I've recently begun drawing as an end in itself again. Please browse my catalog of drawings and paintings. If you have a comment or question, please contact me. I...
