I did this painting from several photos I took at Logan Pass in Glacier National Park. We visited Logan Pass primarily in search of Mountain Goats. When we first arrived, a group of hikers told us about a herd (flock?) of rams they had just seen near the beginning of the Highline Trail. By the time we got over there, the rams had moved away from the trail, but we got some not very exciting photos of them as they crossed the Going to the Sun Road and made their way up the side of Mt. Oberlin. We returned to our original mission and found several goats foraging on the Hidden Lake trail on the other side of Mt. Oberlin. As we were making our way back down the mountain, we rounded a corner on the trail and discovered that the rams had traversed the mountain, crossed our path and decided to rest not 25 yards off our trail. The ram on the right end of the group was clearly the leader, standing guard and ready to challenge any perceived threats.

I love the transparency and immediacy of watercolors and celebrate the happy accidents of the medium, as well as its challenges. After many years of drawing only as a preliminary step to the main event - a painting - I've recently begun drawing as an end in itself again. Please browse my catalog of drawings and paintings.
