This topsail schooner is the Pride of Baltimore II, painted from a photo I took of her in the Narragansett Bay. In a tragic weather-related accident, the original Pride of Baltimore sank in 1986 taking her captain and three members of her crew with her. This ship was commissioned in 1988 to continue the goodwill mission of her predecessor. Both ships are patterned after the Baltimore schooners that helped the U.S. win the War of 1812 with their speed and maneuverability.
Completed in September, 2011. The price of the original includes matting, glazing and framing. Please contact me to discuss delivery arrangements if you're interested in purchasing this painting.
My subject matter reflects three life-long passions: nature, history, and architecture. I have lived most of my life in New England. I love painting subjects from my home region, as well as from the travel that my wife, Linda and I enjoy doing together. I paint only in watercolor, in a style that lies somewhere between impressionistic and photo-realistic. I love the transparency and immediacy of watercolors and celebrate the happy accidents of the medium, as well as its challenges. After many years of drawing only as a preliminary step to the main event - a painting - I've recently begun drawing as an end in itself again. Please browse my catalog of drawings and paintings. Congratulations on your sale Steve!

Steve, this is a very fine painting and many congratulations on your sale. I was interested in your description too and it was pleasing to learn that the U.S. - as with many seafaring countries - honoured the memory of previous vessels and their crews lost at sea by commissioning new ones with the same name. Puzzled about the claim about the U.S. winning the war of 1812 though. I suggest you read the book : "The Challenge" by Professor Andrew Lambert for a very fine piece of research and don't believe the folklore.
