About Steve Hamlin
My subject matter reflects three life-long passions: nature, history, and architecture. I have lived most of my life in New England. I love painting subjects from my home region, as well as from the travel that my wife, Linda and I enjoy doing together.
Among the modest honors that have been bestowed on my work, I'm proudest of the recognition I've received for my wildlife art. My work has been accepted into some of the most prestigious wildlife shows in the US where it has hung alongside paintings by some of the true luminaries of the genre. I have earned Signature Member status in the Society of Animal Artists, the New England Watercolor Society and the Northeast Watercolor Society. I am an elected member of the American Artists Professional League and a Master Artist member of the Bennington Collective of the Bennington Center for the Arts (VT).
I paint primarily in watercolor, in a style that lies somewhere between impressionistic and photo-realistic. I love the transparency and immediacy of watercolors and celebrate the happy accidents of the medium, as well as its challenges. After many years of drawing only as a preliminary step to the main event - a painting - I'm exploring graphite and other drawing media as an end in itself again.
